L'ancien président Jimmy Carter n'est plus de ce monde depuis hier le 29 décembre 2024 et je profite de cela pour vous parler davantage de ce 39 ème président des  États Unis de 1977 à 1981.

Jimmy Carter a aperçu un OVNI alors qu'il attendait le début d'une manifestation du Lions Club, le 6 janvier 1969. Le Lions Club a été l'un des réseaux les plus importants de la vie de Carter - il avait suivi son père dans le groupe de service et avait gravi les échelons en 1969 pour devenir gouverneur de district, responsable d'environ 56 clubs dans le sud-ouest de la Géorgie, un réseau qui lui a donné une visibilité importante en tant qu'homme politique en devenir et auquel il attribuera plus tard l'ambition de se présenter au poste de gouverneur. 

Ce soir de janvier, il était environ 19 h 15, juste après la tombée de la nuit, par une nuit claire et froide, et il se tenait à l'extérieur d'un petit restaurant d'un étage à Leary, en Géorgie, une ville de moins de mille habitants, avec un groupe d'une douzaine d'autres hommes qui attendaient le début de leur réunion à 19 h 30, lorsqu'une lumière brillante a attiré leur attention.

L'un des collègues du club de Carter a pointé l'horizon : "Regardez, à l'ouest !". Les hommes observent une lumière brillante qui semble s'approcher d'eux puis s'éloigner rapidement. "Elle se trouvait à environ 30 degrés au-dessus de l'horizon et semblait aussi grosse que la lune. Elle est devenue plus petite et a pris une couleur rougeâtre, puis elle est redevenue plus grande", se souvient Carter. À certains moments, l'objet lumineux est apparu plus bleu, d'autres fois plus rougeâtre. Il estime que l'objet se trouvait à une distance de 300 à 1 000 mètres, sur fond de ciel étoilé, et le groupe l'a observé pendant 10 à 12 minutes avant qu'il ne semble s'éloigner et disparaître pour de bon. Carter avait un magnétophone cette nuit-là et, comme il l'a expliqué plus tard, il a immédiatement enregistré les souvenirs de ses collègues sur l'incident.

Quelque quatre ans plus tard, Carter, alors gouverneur de Géorgie et sur le point de se présenter à la présidence, a documenté son observation d'OVNI. Hayden Hewes, le directeur de l'ambitieux Bureau international des ovnis, avait appris que Carter avait vu quelque chose de suspect et lui avait envoyé le questionnaire standard du groupe au capitole de l'État à Atlanta. Carter remplit consciencieusement le questionnaire, notant son service militaire antérieur dans la marine américaine et sa formation en physique nucléaire. Il n'était pas fou - et il s'agissait techniquement d'un OVNI, même s'il ne pensait pas qu'il s'agissait d'un vaisseau spatial extraterrestre. Carter a émis l'hypothèse que l'OVNI "était probablement une sorte d'événement électronique", mais le gouverneur a déclaré au journaliste Howell Raines de l'Atlanta Constitution que "l'OVNI était manifestement là, et manifestement non identifié".

Il se trouve que Carter est peut-être le seul président à s'être présenté deux fois contre des observateurs d'OVNI. Il était le candidat démocrate à l'élection présidentielle contre deux adversaires républicains - le président sortant Gerald Ford en 1976 et le gouverneur de Californie Ronald Reagan en 1980 - et les deux hommes avaient eu leurs propres expériences avec les OVNIs. Gerald Ford a mené une enquête au Congrès sur des observations étranges dans son État natal du Michigan dans les années 1960, et Ronald Reagan a rencontré un OVNI alors qu'il volait à bord d'un Cessna Citation près de Bakersfield, en Californie, en 1974.

Lors de sa campagne contre Ford en 1976, Carter a promis qu'il dévoilerait les secrets des OVNI de la nation. "Une chose est sûre, je ne me moquerai jamais des gens qui disent avoir vu des objets non identifiés dans le ciel", a-t-il promis lors de sa première campagne présidentielle. "Si je deviens président, je mettrai à la disposition du public et des scientifiques toutes les informations dont dispose ce pays sur les observations d'OVNI.

Ce courrier était destiné à intégrer la sonde voyager 1 qui avait pour mission l'exploration de Jupiter et de saturne. La Nasa avait voulu y ajouter une forme de capsule temporelle appelle "Golden Record".

The former President Jimmy Carter is no longer with us, having passed away yesterday, December 29, 2024. I take this opportunity to tell you more about this 39th President of the United States, who served from 1977 to 1981.

Jimmy Carter saw a UFO while waiting for the start of a Lions Club event on January 6, 1969. The Lions Club was one of the most significant networks in Carter’s life—he had followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the service group and had climbed the ranks to become a district governor in 1969, overseeing about 56 clubs in southwest Georgia. This network gave him substantial visibility as an up-and-coming politician and later inspired his ambition to run for governor.

That January evening, it was around 7:15 PM, just after dark, on a clear and cold night. Carter stood outside a small one-story restaurant in Leary, Georgia, a town with fewer than a thousand inhabitants. He was with a group of about a dozen other men waiting for their meeting to begin at 7:30 PM when a bright light caught their attention.

One of Carter’s Lions Club colleagues pointed to the horizon: "Look, to the west!" The men saw a bright light that appeared to approach them and then quickly move away. "It was about 30 degrees above the horizon and seemed as large as the moon. It became smaller and took on a reddish color, then grew larger again," Carter later recalled. At times, the bright object appeared more blue, and at other times more reddish. Carter estimated that the object was between 300 and 1,000 meters away, set against a starry sky. The group observed it for 10 to 12 minutes before it appeared to move away and disappear for good. Carter had a tape recorder with him that night and, as he explained later, immediately recorded his colleagues’ recollections of the incident.

About four years later, Carter, who was then the governor of Georgia and preparing to run for president, officially documented his UFO sighting. Hayden Hewes, the director of the ambitious International UFO Bureau, had learned that Carter had seen something unusual and sent him the group’s standard questionnaire to the state capitol in Atlanta. Carter dutifully filled out the questionnaire, noting his prior military service in the U.S. Navy and his training in nuclear physics. He wasn’t crazy—and technically, it was a UFO, though Carter didn’t think it was an extraterrestrial spacecraft. He speculated that the UFO was "probably some kind of electronic phenomenon," but he told journalist Howell Raines of the Atlanta Constitution that "the UFO was definitely there and definitely unidentified."

In the 1970s, many attributed Carter’s sighting to a simple misinterpretation of Venus, which was particularly bright in the night sky at that time—a common phenomenon responsible for a large percentage of UFO sightings. However, to more experienced observers, it seemed unlikely that Carter, trained at the Naval Academy and highly familiar with celestial navigation, could have been mistaken about a planet. The mystery endures, although in 2016, scientists suggested that the sighting could have been caused by barium emissions.

Interestingly, Carter may be the only president to have faced two opponents who also had connections to UFO sightings. He ran as the Democratic candidate for president against two Republican opponents—incumbent Gerald Ford in 1976 and California Governor Ronald Reagan in 1980—both of whom had their own UFO experiences. Gerald Ford had led a congressional investigation into strange sightings in his home state of Michigan during the 1960s, and Ronald Reagan encountered a UFO while flying aboard a Cessna Citation near Bakersfield, California, in 1974.

During his campaign against Ford in 1976, Carter promised to reveal the nation’s UFO secrets. "One thing is for sure: I will never make fun of people who say they’ve seen unidentified objects in the sky," he promised during his first presidential campaign. "If I become president, I’ll make available to the public and scientists all the information this country has about UFO sightings."

Did you also know that on June 16, 1977, President Carter wrote a letter addressed to extraterrestrials? This letter was intended to be included in the Voyager 1 probe, which had a mission to explore Jupiter and Saturn. NASA had wanted to add a kind of time capsule called the "Golden Record."

This included Carter’s letter, a greeting in 55 languages, Earth sounds, animal calls, and natural sounds.
